A Charlotte Strong Edition of Minding Business

Editor’s note: In light of the tragedy of April 30 and ongoing recovery efforts by many in Business Affairs, normal production of Minding Business was suspended until June.

Colleagues,

Do things better. Do better things. Do the right things.

Those three sentences are what we strive for every day in Business Affairs. I have always been proud of how we have lived up to our values, but never more than I was on the evening of April 30 and the days that followed.

Those were without a doubt the darkest days in our University’s 73-year history. Yet, in the midst of that, I saw light and goodness, and much of it came from right here in Business Affairs.

Our division responded in so many ways to the tragedy.

Police ran bravely toward Kennedy, prepared to do whatever it took to keep our University safe. They quickly took the suspect into custody and rendered aid to the wounded. Dispatchers responded to incoming calls from frightened students and employees and their worried family members.

Students, faculty, staff and friends attended a vigil to unite and support the UNC Charlotte community.

Emergency Management jumped into action, opening the Emergency Operations Center and guiding our response and ongoing recovery.

Our communications and marketing team ensured timely information reached our community — on campus and beyond.

When injured students fled into Prospector, Chartwells employees provided first aid until Medic could arrive. Business Services and our Chartwells partners made sure everyone was fed, which goes a long way in crisis response and promoting community.

Human Resources led the effort to provide counseling and support resources to employees as we all processed the trauma we experienced.

Facilities Management restored our physical campus, replacing broken doors and cleaning up other damage, and partnered with University Archives to take care of memorial items placed on the steps of Kennedy.

Financial Services worked to ensure we had the funds needed to support our recovery, processing payments quickly and efficiently.

Individuals from throughout Business Affairs sheltered in place that night with colleagues and students, providing comfort and support in an uncertain time, and responded in the days after in ways that may never be known publicly.

Our division was called upon in unimaginable ways, and you met each challenge with strength and compassion. You most certainly did the right things for UNC Charlotte and each other.

I am grateful to work beside you.

Beth
