Former business affairs VC Harry Arnold dies

Harry “Hap” Arnold, who served as vice chancellor for business affairs from 1989 to 1994, died Monday, July 4.

Arnold joined the University in 1981 as director of financial services. Chancellor E.K. Fretwell appointed him executive assistant to the chancellor and assistant secretary of the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees in 1984, a position he served in until being named vice chancellor for business affairs.

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois said, “I worked with Hap closely during the time I served as provost. It was a time of dynamic change and growth as we moved toward doctoral status. He was always a trusted adviser and friend to Chancellor Woodward and to me. Our thoughts are with (his wife) Jenny and the members of their family.”

Prior to UNC Charlotte, Arnold was in the U.S. Navy, starting in 1954 when he entered as an ensign. He was promoted through the ranks to captain and served in various capacities aboard ships and as a financial officer. His final post was commanding officer of the Navy Finance Center in Cleveland.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Home. Click here to read the obituary published in the Charlotte Observer.
